The other looks to the Vuvalini then to Furiosa and chuckles. Its dry, like his voice, but genuine.
"A fitting end I suppose."
He then looked to the Vuvalini and her clothes which were different from that of the imperator's and definitely the war boy's. "You're not from the Citadel." he stated, then looked to Furiosa. "What was the road war about?"
Obviously Joe had not gone alone, must have taken a good portion of warboys and the like with him. By what could possibly draw the man out of this place and go chasing an imperator around? Just what had she-for she had killed him and therefore he assumed she was to blame-done to incur his wrath?
"Pity we can't do it twice," Furiosa mutters sepulchrally, although in actuality she wouldn't want to go through the chaos again. Maybe just the killing part.
She holds grudges.
She glances at the Vuvalini, too, and flashes a reassuring smile. "No, she came back with me. My tribe, from where I was born."
Giving him one last once-over, she moves to lean against the wall. There are no seats where they stand, so it's the closest approximation she can get to a casual pose. Her arms fold across her chest languidly, the abbreviated left arm on top.
"I took something he wanted back. That's the short version," she says mildly. "The long version is too long...but maybe you know how he kept women for himself, in the Vault up above? Wives."
Shrug. "They wanted out, I wanted to hurt him. Seemed like a perfect match."
His reptilian gaze widened, as did his smile of all pointed teeth. "You made off with the Wives?" he laughed. "How wonderful! Oh he must have been livid!"
Yes, the man had bragged about "his treasures" more than a few times, even to him. Sick pig. Rape was an abomination even in his kin's society. Though the punishment was the offender lived. Just with one or two things missing.
"Well, all seems to have worked out for you and then. Joe dead, a place with food and water. Paradise in the desert as it were." he said
That should be a truly alarming smile, and in the back of her mind she wonders briefly what the point is of his teeth being so sharp, when he feeds on something as intangible as life itself? Maybe just to instill fear. She's going to have questions, the more time she spends with him.
"They asked." She nods soberly. "We took a lot of hits. A costly victory. But we're here now."
Tilting her head, she offers a tentative arm-clasp, not quite willing to shake his hand, but meaning to be polite. "Do you have a name you'd like to be called? I think you know mine."
"Imperator Furiosa." he nods, drawing out a few syllables a bit longer than anyone else might. Names were strange.
He looks to her arm, then his own and mimics the gesture. The clasp is brief, just enough.
"A name..." he looks around the cell, quiet a moment, mind obviously far away, long ago. "I was Commander once among my fellow kin." He looked back to her. "A human named me Todd. You may call me that."
She seems mildly relived by the brevity of the touch, not because she's repelled, but because close proximity to his right hand seems risky just now. He's probably been starved for a long time, unless Joe tossed more prisoners to him than she ever knew.
"Todd." She repeats, and gives him a faint, thoughtful smile. That's an old world name, but of course he's longer-lived than a human would be...and that is a big part of her motivation for being civil, rather than threatening. He must know things. History that has been lost. Maybe even things that can help them.
"Behind me, that's Hela," she indicates the woman. "Guzz is the jumpy war boy that left. That other one's Crank. We'll get you out of here in a little, but I want to see if you can stomach some of our soup first."
He looked to each one she introduced, giving a polite nod to each in turn.
He then looked to Furiosa, contemplating something for awhile, then thought better of voicing it just yet. Best not put all your eggs into one basket just yet.
He remained quiet, saving his energy. If he couldn't eat real food any more, he had to rely on the reserves he had from feeding on his last victim to get him through until he managed to ambush someone in the wastes. And his reserves were pretty low.
The silence seems like it makes Crank nervous, and even Hela shifts restlessly. Furiosa is more or less a rock, though, even with her wounds stinging, and is not pressed to make further conversation.
It's only a few minutes before Guzz returns with a small, lidded kettle of soup, and a dented canteen. "S'got egg in it," he says, holding it out while he stands at the doorway, then looking vaguely ashamed as Furiosa comes to meet him and advancing to get to her halfway. "Sorry, boss."
"You're all right, pup." She shoos him back out of the cell and sits on the floor, placing the kettle between her and Todd and offering him the canteen. "Just water. Don't know if you need it?"
Todd lifted his gaze on the war boy as he returned, the smell of food enticing to him. A good sign.
But the look he must have given the boy must have spooked him for he dare not go further.
Once Furiosa settled down on the floor, he joined her, sitting across from her. He took the canteen with a nod of thanks and opened it, about to take a sip when he paused. Perhaps it was tainted, poisoned. Smelled okay...He cupped a hand and poured some of the cool, clear liquid out into his palm. Looked fine. He sucked it up. When he didn't keel over immediately, he took a few good gulps from the canteen itself before setting it aside.
"When I feed from humans, water isn't a necessity. Everything I need comes from the life I take" he said. He was fortunate that that had not changed with the gene therapy, otherwise he likely would have died from thirst long ago.
Maybe Todd isn't familiar with the very old human rules of hospitality. Most of the residents of the Citadel themselves aren't, but both Hela and Furiosa remember, thanks to the oral tradition of the Vuvalini. Sharing food, and accepting food, creates a kind of oath between host and guest, that neither will harm the other.
Of course, neither the food nor the water is poisoned. Furiosa nods calmly as he tastes it, willing to eat and drink first if he needs the reassurance, but content to let him make that request, rather than offer.
The war boys are still nervous, and Guzz asks softly, "Like how they eat their dead in Gastown?"
"I should never have told you boys that story," Furiosa says, shaking her head wryly.
He opened the tiny kettle of soup, the smell of it-whatever it was-making his mouth water. Another good sign.
Picking it up, he takes a spoonful of just the broth first. A moment of contemplation and he tastes it.
Good. real good. A few more broth spoonfuls and then finally some of the meat. Little at a time, both to ensure he didn't vomit it all up from lack of such nutrition after so long, but also to gauge if this was actually satisfying him.
Todd took it slow, focusing only on the meal and little else. Half the bowl gone, he stopped and set it down with a smile and a nod at Furiosa, picking up the canteen of water for a few more sips before speaking. "Seems as though my need to feed on humans is not necessary. It satisfies."
For all that Gastown has long been an ally of the Citadel, Furiosa and most of the war boys and pups around her tend to regard it as a degenerate place. A hive full of half-feral soldiers following the People Eater, who got his name for a reason. The tales they tell about the place may not be entirely true, but Furiosa knows there's at least a grain of truth to most of them. Life in Gastown is cheap. Dirt cheap.
In the Citadel, even the lowest denominator of slave was used more for muscle power or blood donation, never meat. Now, Furiosa and the Sisters have no intention of burning out the life of anyone if it can be helped. Todd can rest assured this particular broth is made from nothing worse than lizards and turnips and salt.
Furiosa watches him eat and looks increasingly pleased. He can eat it without getting sick, clearly. A good sign. And when he speaks, she gives a little sigh and a smile. "Good. Consider yourself both free and welcome here, then. We'll run you on double rations until you recover from being locked up down here."
She glances back at Hela, who nods, also smiling. "I'll let the girls know."
Todd gave another nod of thanks and returned to eating the rest of the soup, still taking it rather slow to ensure he didn't throw it up.
"I have a few requests." he said, pausing to chew on a rather gamy piece, but not complaining about it. They were working with the bare minimum of supplies.
"Whether you fulfill them or not won't change..." he was going to say "loyalty" but that might be weird. Wraith society was different than human. "My support. After all, you've given me my freedom so the debt I have to pay is greater. Still, one or two of said requests would be very much appreciated. One, I'd like a knife. You're all armed or at least have access to arms, so a little something to protect myself would be appreciated."
Hela departs, but the war boys stay, and Furiosa seems comfortable where she is, content to wait while he finishes eating. She's feeling a little weary already, in all honesty, but she's a pro at continuing on when her energy is at a low ebb, and powering through. This is nothing.
She shrugs casually when he mentions requests. He's allowed to ask whatever he wants. She won't promise to fulfill them, but letting him speak won't harm anyone.
"A knife is not an unreasonable request," she says, though her brow knits a little. His asking for a weapon first off could bode ill...but then again, he doesn't need a weapon to slay a human. It might be best for him to have a knife, in case he's attacked, rather than being forced to fall back on his own biological defenses.
"A place to sleep on my own." This was more for the sake of those here, and to avoid temptation of getting murdered in the middle of the night.
He hadn't the slightest idea how this place was laid out, so he wasn't even sure if extra rooms were available. Apart from maybe Joe's own but if that was the case, he'd rather sleep anywhere else. He'd take the damn hallway before he slept in that man's chambers.
Finishing the soup he set the bowl aside and drank from the canteen, waiting on Furiosa's answer.
That's actually a trickier one, and Furiosa has to take a moment to consider how to work it out. "Mmm. That's practical, I admit. I'm not sure what we're doing with the old Imperators' rooms. They're all dead except me. Mothers know I don't need the whole damn floor, but the Sisters and the Council should get their say first."
Pausing, she gives him a thoughtful look. "What kind of environs do you need? Guess there's always the Vault, but..."
But. She is sure as hell never going back in there herself, even with the door taken off the hinges. Not if she can help it.
"Or the greenthumb shacks in the garden. Or Organic's room. He's dead, too." She sounds pretty pleased about that.
Todd assumed she meant the Wives when she said Sisters, perhaps also the Vuvalini. He'd not take that from them, even temporarily.
Furiosa would be delighted to know that females of his kin were treated almost impossibly better than those here on earth, even before the world went to shit. Didn't mean a male like himself was treated badly, but still, the choice between which was more important in a hive, the commander or the queen was a simple one.
He'd not say no to a shack near the gardens, seeing green every time he awoke would be a very pleasant change over solid rock. "Organics?" he asked, cocking his head. A gardener?
Primarily when she says the Sisters, she does mean the Wives. They'd rather be known by their relationships to one another than by what they were to a dead man they loathed. It's safe to say they count the two living Vuvalini as family now, too, though.
She'd be happy to see him set up in the gardens. He might have to learn to deal with the Dag's sharp tongue, but after what he's already been through...well, that might be more entertaining than unsettling.
"Ugh," she shakes her head. "No, Organic was...the Organic Mechanic. Sort of a poor excuse for a healer. Last I heard, he got left in the desert, and good riddance to the oily smeg."
"A doctor." He snorted, hardly be living that anyone willingly under Joe's rule would be doing anyone any good. The guy was likely more butcher than healer.
"I'll see both, but the gardens sounds far more pleasant."
He finished the canteen of water and got up. "My third request might benefit us both. Before being caught and brought here I lived out of an old bunker. It's a ways from here, three or four days, but if Joe managed not to find it-and I doubt he did-there are more than a few items in it still including maps and books." He said. "I'd like to return to it and scrounge what's useful."
"For a given value," she shrugs. Organic knew his business, she supposes, but he was more or less a butcher.
She gestures at him to keep the canteen. He'll need one of his own to carry around, anyway. They can refill it in the garden, or on the way to the lift. "They are. They're only going to get better."
She's proud of what they've already accomplished, but very much looking forward to making more things grow. The mention of maps and books very definitely catches her attention, though, and she gives him a thoughtful look.
"And you'd share the information with us?" That sounds like what he's suggesting.
"I call that more than fair. But you'd best give yourself a day or two to bounce back, first."
"Of course" he replied, a little surprised that she'd think he wouldn't. But then again he ought not to be, Joe had been fairly old, old enough to know perhaps things that he kept from Furiosa and the rest.
"One more thing." he said. "I'd like to have a look at the source of the water." Obviously it wasn't piped in from any nearby stream or lake therefore it was likely from a reservoir underground. If he could have a look, he could calculate how much they had left.
Those waterfalls Joe did and the celebratory ones were likely doing more harm than good. If the reservoir was low, they were all in trouble and they'd need to find another one or, better yet, make their way to the ocean and build a filtration system. But even if it was high, every drop spilled on the ground that didn't go to someone's mouth or to a plant, was wasteful and a new way to deliver water to the masses was needed if it hadn't already been implemented.
But, she was right, a couple days at least were needed to settle in and recoup from his imprisonment before he did anything more.
Todd waited for her to lead the way out of the cell.
In retrospect, Furiosa thinks Joe kept secrets of the old world from himself, too. Deliberately forgotten, in favor of his ambitions to reshape the Wasteland in his own image. He was like that, Immortan Joe. Thought he could impose his will on reality itself--if he told a lie often enough, he assumed everyone believed it, and started believing it himself. The hell of it is how well and how often he succeeded.
She should have done for him long ago.
"Good luck with that one," she tells him. "But I need to visit the silverthumbs anyway. Get them on board with the rest of us. It's an aquifer," she explains. "Deep underground. I don't think we know the depth, but I'll show you the charts Joe had. It's big, unbelievably big, but I know there's no way of knowing how much is left in it."
She's thought about this already, as she recovered. The waterfall can't stay on forever. Letting it run this long is a calculated risk. They're going to need the Wretched to support them when the inevitable attacks from the remnants of those war parties come around.
An aquifer? That did complicate things a bit, still, he'd give it his best shot. He was good at calculations after all.
They made their way out of the cell, Todd not looking back as they headed to the surface. There was a bit of a walk, as the cell was rather deep. But slowly he felt and tasted the subtle air changes until, at last, they were on the surface.
It must have been a little after midday and he stepped out into that early afternoon light. How long had it been? A life time. Well, a human's anyway. Taking long, deep breaths, the Wraith relished the warmth of the light and the brightness of the almost too blue sky.
Todd looked to Furiosa after a moment. "So, going to give me the grand tour?" he grinned.
The cell will be better put to other uses. Storage, probably, as Furiosa doesn't have any intention of keeping prisoners, but no space will be wasted.
The war boys follow behind them as they go up, and Furiosa looks almost as relieved as Todd to be back in the open air. They're on a low ledge now, and if he looks down he can probably see some of the Wretched milling around, seeking shade to rest the midday hours in.
"I suppose I'd better," Furiosa tells him. "For the sake of making sure there are no misunderstandings."
Letting him wander around alone so soon might cause a wave of panic amongst the war boys. That wouldn't be safe for anyone. "Organic's rooms first, I think. I need to check them for painkillers anyway."
Todd looked down upon the Wretched briefly before he gave a grunt and a nod and walked along beside her, keeping pace despite easily being able to walk ahead of her.
"Are you the only female Imperator?" he asked. She'd mentioned there were none left of course but he assumed at one time or another there were many, or several at least. Had Joe been non-sexist in that department or had she needed to fight her way to be with the boys as it were? Considering how he treated women around here, he assumed the latter.

Date: 2016-07-29 01:30 am (UTC)The war boys follow behind them as they go up, and Furiosa looks almost as relieved as Todd to be back in the open air.

She'd mentioned there were none left of course but he assumed at one time or another there were many, or several at least. Had Joe been non-sexist in that department or had she needed to fight her way to be with the boys as it were? Considering how he treated women around here, he assumed the latter.
